GEM THEATRE - GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE 150TH CELEBRATION
Great Locomotive Chase Celebration 150 years ago during the American Civil War in 1862 a small band of Union spies carried on a daring mission into Georgia in what became known as the most famous train chase in history, "The Great Locomotive Chase". More chase history ?? On Saturday, April 14th, Calhoun will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of The Great Locomotive Chase at the Historic Gem Theater with festivities kicking off at 3:00pm. The celebration outside includes Civil War redactors displaying infantry weapons and a cannon along with the Stand Watie Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans greeting guests. As a special treat, the Gordon County Historical Society will host a book signing of the book "Crossroads to Conflict" by author Barry Brown at a reduced price. Crossroad is the definitive tour guild to Civil War sites in Georgia and has many sites in Gordon County covered within. Mr. Brown will be at the Gem from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. At 3:30pm Gordon County historian, Ken Padgett will present to the audience, a light humored telling of The Great Locomotive Chase as it related to the Calhoun and Resaca area. At 4:00pm the Gem will show the Watt Disney's movie entitled "The Great Locomotive Chase" at 4:00pm staring Fess Parker. As a special treat, the book signing, storytelling, and movie will be provided free to the public in the Gem Theatres apperception to the community in their support in restoring the historic theatre. At 7:30pm the Gem and the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce will host the main feature of the celebration with concert by Mr. Bobby Horton. Mr. Horton is America's most famous musician of Civil War era music mixing humor, stories, as well as using period interments. Mr. Horton's concert will hold the attention of the entire family. The concert will serve the dual propose celebrating the New Harmonies exhibit at the Harris Arts Center as well as the songs of the period of The Great Locomotive Chase. Admission will be $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students with proceeds to support the Gem Theatre. Come on down and bring the family to see the newly restored historic Gem Theatre and enjoy this family orientated afternoon and night of fun and entertainment in celebrating our history!
